Vacuum Circuit Breaker (VCB)

ZW32-12(outdoor) Vacuum Circuit Breaker

ZW32-12 outdoor vacuum circuit breaker is a three-phase pole-mounted switching device rated at 12kV, designed for outdoor distribution networks. Built to IEC 62271-100, this outdoor VCB features a three-phase separated column structure with durable epoxy or silicone rubber insulation for weather resistance. Rated at 630A with short-circuit breaking capacity up to 25kA, the spring operating mechanism supports manual and motor-assisted operation. Widely deployed on utility poles in overhead line networks, this pole-mounted circuit breaker serves substations, industrial facilities, and rural distribution systems where outdoor installation and frequent switching operations are required.

ZW32-12 Outdoor Pole-Mounted Vacuum Circuit Breaker and Recloser - 12kV

ZW32-12 is an outdoor pole-mounted vacuum circuit breaker for 12kV overhead distribution lines. Unlike indoor breakers that live inside a protective cabinet, ZW32-12 is a self-contained sealed unit designed to be bolted directly to a distribution pole and left in the weather for decades. With an integrated controller it operates as an automatic circuit recloser.

WHY RECLOSING TRANSFORMS OVERHEAD NETWORK PERFORMANCE

The majority of faults on overhead distribution lines are transient - a branch touching a conductor, a bird bridging an insulator, a lightning flashover, wind-driven conductor clash. The fault clears itself the instant the arc is de-energised. A conventional breaker trips and stays open, so a momentary event becomes a sustained outage requiring a crew to drive out and reclose it manually.

A recloser trips, waits a set dead time, and closes again automatically. If the fault was transient, supply is restored in seconds with no crew and no sustained outage. Only if the fault persists through the programmed reclose sequence does the recloser lock out. On rural and peri-urban feeders this typically removes the large majority of sustained interruptions, which is why reclosers are central to reliability improvement programmes across African and CIS distribution utilities.

BUILT FOR THE OUTDOOR ENVIRONMENT

The vacuum interrupters and mechanism are sealed inside a solid-insulation epoxy or silicone-housed body rated IP65 - dust-tight and protected against water jets. There is no cabinet to keep dry, no ventilation path for insects and no internal air gap to be degraded by pollution. Silicone rubber insulator housings resist UV, salt fog and surface tracking, which is what allows the same unit to serve coastal West Africa, Gulf desert feeders and Siberian overhead lines.

CONTROL AND INTEGRATION

Supplied with an integrated CT and, on controller-equipped versions, overcurrent and earth-fault protection with programmable reclose sequences (typically one to three reclose attempts before lockout). The controller supports remote status monitoring and control over SCADA and can be paired with sectionalisers for automatic fault isolation. A manual operating handle allows local opening and visible confirmation of position, and a magnetic or spring actuator gives long maintenance-free life.

MARKET FIT
The 12kV class serves 11kV overhead networks across the Middle East and Africa and 10kV networks in Russia, CIS and Eastern Europe - all regions with extensive rural and peri-urban overhead distribution where crew travel time to a fault is measured in hours. Saudi Arabian supply verified at 60Hz. Low-temperature versions available for CIS winter service.

Typical Applications

PRIMARY APPLICATIONS
- Automatic reclosing on 10kV and 11kV overhead distribution feeders - the core application.
- Rural and peri-urban electrification networks across Nigeria, Kenya, Ghana, Tanzania and Uganda, where long radial feeders and slow crew response make automatic restoration essential.
- Feeder sectionalising, dividing a long overhead line into sections so a permanent fault affects only one section rather than the whole feeder.
- Branch line and spur protection, isolating a faulted lateral without tripping the main feeder.
- Transformer protection on pole-mounted distribution transformers.
- Overhead-to-underground transition points.
- CIS and Russian rural distribution on 10kV overhead networks, where line lengths and winter access difficulty make remote reclosing especially valuable.
- Renewable generation connection on overhead-fed solar and wind installations.
- Load break and isolation duty for planned maintenance switching.

RELIABILITY ECONOMICS

Utilities measure performance on SAIDI and SAIFI. Because most overhead faults are transient, automatic reclosing converts what would be sustained interruptions into momentary ones, and remote control removes crew travel time from the restoration path on the remainder. For utilities under regulatory reliability targets this is usually the lowest cost per outage-minute avoided of any network investment.

REGIONAL FIT

- Africa: extensive overhead distribution with long feeders and limited crew coverage - the strongest application case in our markets.
- Middle East: 11kV overhead feeders in outlying and industrial areas. Saudi Arabia requires 60Hz verification.
- Russia and CIS: 10kV rural overhead networks, GOST R certification and low-temperature qualification for winter access constraints.
- Eastern Europe: 10kV rural distribution to EN 62271-100.

NOT SUITABLE FOR
Indoor switchgear panels - specify VS1-12 or VSG-12. Underground cable networks with no overhead section, where a ring main unit is the correct solution. Systems above 12kV.

Quality Control

TYPE TESTING

- Type tested to the applicable IEC standard - IEC 62271-100 for circuit breakers, IEC 62271-102 for earthing switches and disconnectors, IEC 62271-103 for load break switches.
- Verified for rated short-circuit breaking and making capacity, short-time withstand current, power-frequency and lightning impulse withstand, temperature rise, and mechanical endurance across the full rated operating sequence.
- Third-party certification from KEMA, ASTA, CESI or TUV available where the tender requires witnessed evidence.

VACUUM INTERRUPTER CONTROL (where applicable)

- Every interrupter is vacuum-integrity tested before assembly; vacuum degradation is the dominant failure mode in a VCB and is not visible externally once installed.
- Contact stroke, over-travel and contact wear allowance measured and recorded per pole.
- Interrupters sourced only from qualified manufacturers with batch traceability.

IN-PROCESS INSPECTION

- Insulating components partial-discharge tested before assembly.
- Mechanism spring force and charging characteristic verified against specification.
- Pole-centre distance and mounting interface dimensions checked against drawing - critical for retrofit interchangeability.
- Plating thickness on current-carrying contacts verified per batch.

ROUTINE TESTING - 100%, NO SAMPLING

- Power-frequency withstand voltage across the open contacts and to earth.
- Main circuit contact resistance measurement.
- Mechanical characteristic curve: closing time, opening time, contact bounce, and three-phase simultaneity.
- Operating mechanism function at minimum, rated and maximum control voltage - a unit that only operates at nominal voltage will fail during a real disturbance when station battery voltage sags.
- Auxiliary switch continuity and position signalling verification.
- Serialised routine test report issued with every unit.

TRACEABILITY AND SYSTEM

- ISO 9001 quality management system.
- Serial number traceability to vacuum interrupter batch, mechanism batch and insulation component batch.
- Test records retained for the warranty period and available on request.

ENVIRONMENTAL QUALIFICATION

Where the destination environment exceeds IEC reference conditions we qualify against it: elevated-ambient temperature-rise verification for Gulf service, salt-spray testing for coastal sites, and low-temperature operation verification with cold-rated lubricant for GOST 15150 climatic versions.
